Is Free and Open Source Software really free? Free software can be obtained free of charge, the entry barriers are low but the operation will still cost you money because ….
- The operation is carried out by personnel whose time is scarce and costs money.
- Often results in high expenditures for getting used to this software.
- The result is a noticeable disturbance in case of failures.
- Who checks new versions, who knows all the tips and tricks of a software?
- There is the need to update to support new hardware.
From this list follows: A software may be free to procure – introduction and operation are not. The most economical solution for the introduction are workshops for commissioning and staff training. The most economical solution for long-term operation is a maintenance and support agreement.
