In perfect weather, almost 1000 geo-experts and visitors from all over the world made the tenth FOSS4G in Bonn from August 21 to August 28, 2016 a complete success. The company terrestris was not only involved in the conference as a sponsor, but also with its managing director Till Adams as chair, it was significantly involved in the organization and implementation. In addition, terrestris also contributed to the conference in terms of content in the form of workshops and lectures.
The beginning and the end of the conference were characterized by codesprints, to which developers of numerous open source projects gathered in an exclusive atmosphere in the Basecamp Bonn. On August 22 and 23, numerous workshops were also held, in which participants were able to acquire new knowledge about open source GIS software and direct their questions to core developers. A novelty of this year’s conference was a B2B meeting, where entrepreneurs could present their business in 5-minute short presentations and make contacts along the way.
The former plenary hall of the German Bundestag in the World Conference Center Bonn then formed the optimal center for the core of the conference from August 24 to August 26, in which a wealth of lectures were presented, which can also be viewed as a video afterwards: http://video.foss4g.org/foss4g2016/videos/index.php
The videos of the lectures of the company terrestris are linked below:
- Marc Jansen (terrestris) and Christian Mayer (meggsimum) – GeoExt3 — Universal WebGIS applications with OpenLayers 3 und ExtJS 6
- Marc Jansen (terrestris) and Andreas Hocevar (Boundless) – What’s new and cool in OpenLayers
- Hinrich Paulsen (terrestris) – IWRM in Mongolia (MoMo): Managing geodata with SHOGun and empowering the people
In addition, terrestris was involved in the following workshops:
- Introduction to OpenLayers
- Creating WebGIS Applications with GeoExt3
- Enterprise class deployment for GeoServer and GeoWebcache: Optimizing performances and robustness
The conference was rounded off by various social events. For the entire week, five pubs in Bonn’s old town were declared “official FOSS4G Pubs” in order to enable the participants to end the official events in company. After the first day in the WCCB, there were also musical surprise guests at the Icebreaker Event in Basecamp Bonn. The highlight of the socializing was finally the gala event in the form of a boat trip on the MS Rheinenergie. Here, not only the good weather and an excellent meal were convincing, but also the musical contributions of Cellodion, The Queen Kings and DJ Rafa created the best atmosphere on board.
As a home game in Bonn, the FOSS4G 2016 was a special event for the company terrestris and we are looking forward to the FOSS4G 2017 in Boston, USA.
