GeoServer is an established and extremely versatile map server that supports all common OGC standards as well as countless data formats. However, in the context of modern microservice architectures that enable scaling in cloud environments, GeoServer, as a monolithic software, reaches its technical limits. Against this background, the GeoServer Cloud project was created, which
transforms the existing GeoServer implementations into individually deployable individual components through extension and adaptation. These can then be used within a microservice architecture in container-based management environments such as Kubernetes and scaled as required.
The presentation generally highlights the technical concepts and decisive differences to the “Vanilla GeoServer” (such as the data directory/catalog), discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these developments, presents the most important innovations from the project and thus provides valuable decision support for the selection of a suitable GeoServer variant.
