New geoportal of the “Marine Data Infrastructure Germany (MDI-DE)” is online

The MDI-DE geoportal has been in operation for 10 years operated by 8 different federal and state authorities. It has now been completely revised as part of a tender process since 2021. The partnership of the administrations has set itself the goal of standardizing decentrally stored geodata, including the associated metadata of the individual authorities, and offering a central access to the same with the geoportal.

At its core, the new geoportal is based on the open source software Masterportal. This has been extended by various add-ons during the course of the project. A central component of the new geoportal is the index-based search component, which was implemented with the open source search engine Elasticsearch. The search uses various data and metadata gazetteers in its search index. On the user interface for the users, a single central search field is available for accessing this complex data structure in the background. All results are displayed in a clear list with filter options and further actions. Such an action makes it possible, for example, to load WMS services directly from the search into the map application. Downloadable sources and data can be exported in various formats; a Masterportal extension is also responsible for this.

The clear homepage of the geoportal offers direct access to the various offers. The MDI-DE provides map services on various topics, including, for example, dike lines, geological data, bathymetry data and data from environmental monitoring, to name just a few.

If you select direct access to the actual geoportal via “Maps”, users can select from the various subject areas; the relevant topics are then preloaded directly.

The coastal gazetteer is a place name register for German sea and coastal areas. In total, the database contains over 10,000 historical and current place names and associated geometries, which can be accessed via the “Coastal Gazetteer” map application.

In recent months, we were allowed to develop the new geoportal in close coordination with the project group of the client. Based on Masterportal, we have developed an intuitive and clearly designed application that we would be happy to demonstrate to you.
