Here is the official press release from the Ulm city administration:

Participatory campaign for a free map of favorite places in and around Ulm
There are many beautiful places in and around Ulm that you can discover in your free time. Under the motto “map-it.ulm”, the city of Ulm has launched the first two-week participatory campaign on the Internet, in which the local knowledge of citizens is in demand: On a map, you can mark favorite places in predefined categories.

Maps for citizens and visitors of Ulm will be even better if many people can contribute their local knowledge. This is the idea behind the motto “map-it.ulm”. The aim of the first participatory campaign is to create a free map in which everyone can mark their favorite places in predefined categories on a map themselves. With OpenStreetMap as the background map, map-it.ulm also relies on a globally successful participatory map project. In addition to the aerial view of the city of Ulm, we also provide a background map with OpenStreetMap that does not stop at the national border in the Danube. “Favorite places are completely independent of administrative boundaries on paper,” says Lucia Erdt, head of the Geoinformation Competence Center in the IT Team department of the City of Ulm.

Mayor Gunter Czisch is enthusiastic about the idea of directly incorporating the knowledge of many into the creation of maps. “map-it.ulm” – these are maps for everyone to participate in, by everyone for everyone in and around Ulm. “Put a point on the map, select a category, write text, done.” Even after the two-week campaign is over, the map of favorite places will remain accessible to everyone on the Internet and will be made available to the public as open data for free reuse.

Mayor Czisch is already one step ahead: The map-it campaign will become really interesting when citizens contribute their local knowledge to a topic that is subject to high dynamics or for which there are currently no up-to-date digital maps available. And so it is not surprising that the city administration is already working on ideas for the next participatory campaign from “map-it.ulm”.
