GeoExt Codesprint Spring 2012

What is a code sprint?
A code sprint is something very typical of open source. The goal is to bring together developers from around the world working on a software in one location, in order to quickly advance the software development itself as part of an intensive workshop. The result of last year’s OpenLayers code sprint, for example, was mobile operating functions, which now benefit all OpenLayers users.

GeoExt
GeoExt is used to build desktop-like GIS applications on the Internet. The framework combines the GIS functions of the web mapping component OpenLayers with the elegant user interface of the JavaScript library ExtJS from Sencha. GeoExt is available as free software under the BSD license.

Ext JS 4
The new version Ext JS 4 has been available for some time. Ext JS 4 offers a wealth of attractive new functions, such as a chart function and an API to Sencha Touch for building mobile applications. A so-called Model-View-Controller architecture (MVC) has been integrated, the API has been extended, new classes have been added and the documentation has been completely revised.

GeoExt Codesprint 2012
GeoExt is currently still based on Ext JS 3. However, the API of Ext JS 4 differs from those of previous versions. In order for the new Ext JS functions to be made available to GeoExt users, GeoExt must be converted. For this reason, a code sprint will take place in spring 2012 with the aim of developing GeoExt 2.0 based on Ext JS 4. Developers from the companies are participating

provided. These companies provide core developers of GeoExt 1.x or have experience as service providers in building applications with Ext JS 4, as the GeoExt Mobile library “GXM” recently developed by terrestris shows. For a meeting of 8 developers for 5 days, an estimated budget of €40,000 (US$52,000) is required. This covers travel costs, accommodation and part of the costs for the developers. The remaining cost share for the developer hours is borne by the implementing or participating companies themselves.

Sponsor search
To cover the budget mentioned above, we are looking for sponsors. Sponsors can of course name their priorities with regard to the desired functions in GeoExt 2.0. These priorities will be taken into account by the development team. However, completion cannot be guaranteed due to possible dependencies on other functions, which in turn require more work. Immediately after the code sprint, all results will be available online and for download! Of course, all sponsors will be mentioned by name.

Call
At this point, we would like to cordially invite all organizations and users of the GeoExt software to contribute to the code sprint. Become a sponsor and benefit from all the innovations that the software experiences. If you have any questions and/or are interested in sponsoring the code sprint, to whatever extent, please contact info@terrestris.de
