MoMo Status Workshop in Mongolia

This year’s workshop (May 15-17, 2012) on the status of the project German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), funded by the Integrated Water Resources Management: Model Region Mongolia (MoMo), will take place in Darkhan, the country’s second-largest city, about 250 km north of the Mongolian capital, Ulan Bator. Two years of work have already been completed in the 3-year project, and the schedule is correspondingly tight to present the results achieved so far to all stakeholders in the form of lectures, workshops and site visits.

The topics of the workshop include:

  • Hydrological implications of climate change
  • Land use changes and its hydrological effects
  • Groundwater monitoring, modeling and simulation
  • Assessment of ecological quality using bioindicators
  • Nutrient balancing
  • Integrated wastewater system for the city of Darkhan
  • Current status of water disposal in the city of Darkhan
  • Pilot operation of wastewater treatment plants in Darkhan and Orkhon Sum
  • Wastewater treatment with integrated wood production
  • River basin management in Mongolia
  • Fisheries management in the Onon catchment area
  • The influence of education outside the classroom on IWRM

Since all issues take place in a spatial context, professional geoinformation management is essential, which in the present case is contributed to the project by terrestris. It is already becoming clear that significant results have been achieved that have attracted interest beyond Mongolia.
