MDI-DE Portal

The project Marine Data Infrastructure Germany (MDI-DE), coordinated by the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW), has created a central geoportal that makes access to marine specialist data easier than ever before. Whether for coastal protection, engineering or environmental monitoring – the portal combines data from a wide variety of sources, makes it visually accessible and directly reusable. With its user-friendly design and the use of state-of-the-art web technologies, the MDI-DE Portal creates a reliable basis for data-based decisions relating to German marine and coastal research.

Challenge

The main challenge was to create a platform that integrates large amounts of data from various sources, makes it searchable and easily accessible for users. This included:

  • The long-term maintainability and expandability of the system through the use of a component-based architecture.
  • The implementation of a powerful, index-based search component for several thousand topic layers and different data sources.
  • The integration of import and export tools for geodata to ensure efficient data management and reuse.
  • The connection of various European and national gazetteer data, metadata and other sources of information.
  • The implementation of an intuitive user interface with a variety of functions for research, data visualization and use.

Services

The following measures were implemented to meet these requirements:

  • Implementation of the geoportal based on the Masterportal:
    • Adaptation and configuration of the open source software “Masterportal”.
    • Integration of approximately 3000 topic layers via JSON-based configuration.
  • Development of Masterportal add-ons:
    • PortalWrapper: Implementation of the basic portal infrastructure and homepage.
    • Generic Geodata Importer and Exporter: Enables the integration and export of data in various formats.
  • Search component with Elasticsearch:
    • Development of an index-based search with a central search field.
    • Integration of metadata from the Nokis-MDI-DE-CSW, coastal and European gazetteer data as well as MDI-DE-relevant websites and literature.
    • Presentation of results in a clear list with filter options and further actions.
  • Integration of WMS services:
    • Enabling the loading of WMS services directly from the search result list into the map application.
    • Export of downloadable data in various formats.

Result

The MDI-DE Portal is an innovative and powerful platform that makes marine data from various sources centrally available. Users can use an index-based search to quickly and specifically access data, visualize it, download it and reuse it in other applications. With its flexible architecture and extensive functions, the portal is optimally tailored to the needs of science, planning and protection of the marine environment.

The project demonstrates how state-of-the-art technologies and open source software solutions can contribute to the efficient provision and use of complex data sets.
