MapProxy

MapProxy is a versatile open-source software that can be used to accelerate, combine, and optimize web map services. A typical application is the caching of WMS services such as ALKIS data or aerial photographs to provide them to users more quickly and reliably – for example, as WMS or WMTS. More complex scenarios are also possible: For example, different map sources can be combined into one service, for example with coarse overview maps for low zoom levels and detailed maps at high magnification.

The open source proxy for geodata, to cache, accelerate and transform it – in any desktop or WebGIS client

As an established and continuously developed software, MapProxy is extremely feature-rich and flexible. Source services from WMS, Tiles (XYZ or WMTS), ArcGIS Rest API, Mapnik, MapServer (Mapfile Integration) can be read and cached in various cache formats (file-based, SQLITE, couchdb, riak, redis, s3, compact, GeoPackage). Coverages can be defined to request the original source only in a specific area and even crop it to one or more polygons.

Our services:

  • Implementation in a wide variety of IT environments
  • Used in our OWS Premium Service and many other projects
  • Further developments
  • Consulting
  • Training courses and workshops
  • Support and maintenance

Advantages:

  • Can be used both as a stand-alone application and integrated into existing GDIs
  • Fast map provision through caching
  • Reprojection and transformation on-the-fly
  • Open Source

An extremely helpful function is seeding. In a seeding configuration, time and space-defined jobs can be created to control the automatic creation and cleaning up of caches. These can be started manually or with the help of scripts (for example, CRON jobs) and manage the regular caching of services. A common use case is the seeding of ALKIS data and aerial photographs for heavily frequented areas, so that end users can access pre-calculated tiles instead of having to wait for the original source.
