Localdetect is a research project in which we at terrestris are involved. The focus of this project is the development of a system for locating animals based on a miniaturized transponder with a range of up to 30 km. One challenge is the miniaturization requirement for use in falcon tracking, taking into account a self-sufficient operational readiness of 48 hours. The implementation here requires the use of low-energy transmission and reception technology.
The project partners TU Berlin and innotas are responsible for these tasks.
The development of intelligent algorithms that can be used to predict the location of the animal in the event of signal loss is the responsibility of terrestris.
On August 11, 2017, the project partners met in Ralswiek on the island of Rügen to hold a discussion with the falconer Volker Walter (https://www.falknereiwalter.com/). Information was requested from him primarily on the behavioral patterns of falcons, on the possibilities of attaching sensors to the falcons, but also on the requirements and wishes of falconers for the system to be developed.
In addition to conveying exciting facts, there was of course also the opportunity to see some of the very impressive birds that are presented to interested parties in Ralswiek in connection with the Störtebeker Festival (http://www.stoertebeker.de) from June 24 to September 09, 2017.
You can find a small insight into this very exciting and informative appointment in the following pictures.
