The wms2GO project was developed as part of the Federal IT Investment Program and on behalf of the Federal Agency for IT Services, BMVBS division, together with our partner company Wheregroup. The goal of wms2GO is to be able to use WMS (Web Map Services) and WFS (Web Feature Services) on a laptop or tablet PC, mobile and without internet access. For this purpose, terrestris developed a backend that caches the WMS and WFS map services, and a configurable client. Our partner company developed middleware for order management using the PHP framework “Symfony.”
wms2GO has now also been released as an open source project and is now available under http://wms2go.sourceforge.net/ for free use and further development. For pragmatic reasons, an initial version without order management has been released.
With wms2GO, users can select any map sections of a WMS and then use them offline in a local map application (offline client) on a mobile device. The offline client is automatically generated and provided as a zip file. In addition to the previously selected map content, it contains practical functions such as displaying the current GPS position, print function, displaying georeferenced photos, and the ability to enter geometric objects and notes in the map and export them. All you need for offline use is a web browser.
