OpenLayers, the extremely popular JavaScript library for WebGIS applications of various kinds, has been available in the current version 2.8 since yesterday.
The official release notes for version 2.8 particularly emphasize the following relevant aspects of the new version, which also seem very important to us:
- Control-assisted selection of features from multiple vector layers
- Snapping and splitting of vector geometries (especially relevant for digitization capabilities)
- Labeling of vector layers with arbitrary text
- An explicit GetFeature and GetFeatureInfo control for WMS or WFS services, etc.
- New layer types:
- ArcXML
- OpenStreetMap, OSM (as a preset example of so-called XYZ layers)
- MapGuide “served tiles”
- Pre-rendered ka-Map Tiles
- Access to ArcGIS Server data
In addition, numerous internal improvements (e.g. in strategies, formats, etc.) have been integrated and more than 30 bugs have been fixed in total. Congratulations to the OpenLayers team for this promising release!
We are already looking forward to updating our existing applications based on OpenLayers and Mapfish. And in the upcoming new developments, we will be able to directly exploit the full potential of OpenLayers 2.8 from the start.
If you have any questions about OpenLayers, Mapfish or WebGIS in general, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be happy to show you the advantages of OpenSource-GIS software based on our references.
